HBS Club of Charlotte Presents $5,000 to Urban Ministry Center

Dale Mullenix, Executive Director of the Urban Ministry Center receives a $5,000 check from Tim Johnson, Instructor in the Management Development Program.

Recently, Tim Johnson met with Dale Mullenix, Executive Director of the Urban Ministry Center to present a check for $5,000 from the Harvard Business School Club of Charlotte.

The contribution will help purchase about 10,000 meals for homeless people in Charlotte.

The Urban Ministry Center is an Inter-faith organization in Charlotte, North Carolina serving those who face homelessness and poverty.

"Not much is certain in the life of a homeless person, but they can count on one thing: St. Peter’s Soup Kitchen at the Urban Ministry Center. We are open for lunch every day of the year, with a warm invitation to come in for a hot meal. The times are uncertain and the needs are critical. Our staff and army of volunteers are seeing larger crowds and new faces everyday.  In 2008 we served over 99,000 lunches at a cost of less than 50 cents per meal. We will serve well over 100,000 meals in 2009."

The MDP Program Instructors nominated 16 deserving non-profits, many of which they are personally involved with as a volunteer, a donor, or a board member. The Instructors then voted to select 8 non-profits to receive $5,000 each.

The Management Development Program allows mid-career executives to hone their decision making skills while discussing case studies in accounting, marketing, finance, operations, organizational behavior, leadership, and ethics. Volunteer Charlotte-based alumni of the Harvard Business School teach the course through Harvard’s famous case study method. Currently, 26 local alumni teach in the program.

The Harvard Business School Club of Charlotte has donated $117,000 (cumulative) to non-profits over the past 6 years.
