HBS Club of Charlotte Presents $5,000 to Salvation Army Center of Hope

Stacey Bergeron and Gretchen Oakley of the Salvation Army receive a $5,000 check from Tim Johnson, Instructor in the Management Development Program.

Recently, Tim Johnson met with Stacey Bergeron, Operations Manager for the Salvation Army Center of Hope (Women and Children's Homeless Shelter) to present a check for $5,000 from the Harvard Business School Club of Charlotte.

Bergeron said, "With the support of the HBS Club of Charlotte, we are able to support women and children whose only other options would be sleeping in their cars or on the streets."

Families who are homeless, hungry and hurting can come to The Salvation Army Center of Hope to be fed, sheltered, clothed, trained, and most importantly, loved.

The Center of Hope is located at 534 Spratt Street near Uptown Charlotte.  This 36,000 square foot facility has 202 beds, but is frequently "home" to 230 women and children - making it the largest women and children's homeless shelter in the Southeast.

The Center of Hope admits 5600 women and children every year. This means that about 21 arrive each day as 21 leave. 1000 of those served were children.

The MDP Program Instructors nominated 16 deserving non-profits, many of which they are personally involved with as a volunteer, a donor, or a board member. The Instructors then voted to select 8 non-profits to receive $5,000 each.

The Management Development Program allows mid-career executives to hone their decision making skills while discussing case studies in accounting, marketing, finance, operations, organizational behavior, leadership, and ethics. Volunteer Charlotte-based alumni of the Harvard Business School teach the course through Harvard’s famous case study method. Currently, 26 local alumni teach in the program.

The Harvard Business School Club of Charlotte has donated $117,000 (cumulative) to non-profits over the past 6 years.
