HBS Club of Charlotte Presents $5,000 to A Child's Place

Annebelle Suddreth, Executive Director of A Child's Place, receives a $5,000 check from Gary Green, Instructor in the Harvard Business School Club of Charlotte Management Development Program.

Recently, Gary Green met with Annabelle Suddreth, Executive Director of A Child's Place, to present a check for $5,000 from the Harvard Business School Club of Charlotte.

With no permanent residence, homeless children often stop going to school -- the one place that should provide structure in a life of transition.  Without the influence and stability of  a classroom environment, these children lose more than a chance to learn.  They also lose the crucial sense of belonging gained from interacting with friends and other students.  But there is hope for these children -- and help -- through A Child's Place.  Founded in 1989, A Child's Place is a collaborative effort between the Charlotte, NC community and Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools (CMS).

The goals of A Child's Place are to:

  • provide stable, appropriate education to homeless students
  • provide support services to enhance their opportunities for academic success
  • provide services to families to ensure long term stability and self-sufficiency

Last summer, Annabelle Suddreth attended a week-long Non Profit Management Program at the Harvard Business School.

The MDP Program Instructors nominated 16 deserving non-profits, many of which they are personally involved with as a volunteer, a donor, or a board member. The Instructors then voted to select 8 non-profits to receive $5,000 each.

The Management Development Program allows mid-career executives to hone their decision making skills while discussing case studies in accounting, marketing, finance, operations, organizational behavior, leadership, and ethics. Volunteer Charlotte-based alumni of the Harvard Business School teach the course through Harvard’s famous case study method. Currently, 26 local alumni teach in the program.

The Harvard Business School Club of Charlotte has donated $117,000 (cumulative) to non-profits over the past 6 years.
