Read this article to get a recap of the recent meeting with Susan DeVore, President and CEO of Premier, Inc. See the video, see pictures, and download the handouts!
Susan Devore recently gave a very timely talk to the HBS Club of Charlotte on the topic of Sustaining Health Care Reform: A Culture of Integration, Innovation, and Transformation. She used a very interesting analogy to explain the complexity of health care reform. A simple project is like baking a pie. A complicated project is like shooting a rocket. There are thousands of decisions that have to go right, but it can be managed and you can replicate it. A complex project, on the other hand, is like raising a child. You cannot predict the outcome, even if you have done it before. Health Care Reform is a classic example of a complex process.
The biggest takeaways for me from Susan Devore's talk:
Healthcare reform is at least a 20 year effort. What is being discussed now is only a start.
What is being discussed now is worth doing, because it provides close to universal coverage, and it provides the proper incentives for the players in the health care industry to reduce cost and provide better outcomes.
With the proper incentives, innovation can flourish among those closest to the patient.
Premier is well positioned to contribute to successful Health Care Reform.
The capacity crowd was highly engaged, and had a lot of great questions and discussion.
Thanks to Susan Devore for a very thought-provoking evening!
